Remarks

• large pectinid (80-130 mm) with flat valves and only internal ribs (37-50) on both valves
• colour of the left (upper) valve is brown, often with black spots
• Amusium pleuronectes (Linnaeus, 1758) is smaller in size (60-90 mm) and has less internal ribs (24-35)
• sometimes confused with Ylistrum japonicum taiwanicum (Habe, 1992) but the internal colouration is different:
  

  	Ylistrum balloti colouration inside is white colouration of the left (upper) valve is brown with a lot of black spots
  	Ylistrum japonicum taiwanicum colouration inside is white with a yellowbrown margin colouration of the left (upper) valve is light brown without the black spots
